Teaching content
|
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the lecture also covers practical aspects of insulating materials and electric arcs. The contents of the lecture are:
- Liquid dielectrics
- Solid dielectrics
- Partial discharges
- Ageing of insulating materials
- Insulating capacity as a random variable
- Arcing
- Arc extnction
|
Learning objectives
|
After successfully completing the module, students will be able to explain the basic mechanisms of electrical breakdowns in liquid and solid dielectrics, describe the basic properties of dielectrics and name the advantages and disadvantages of various insulating materials and their areas of application. They will be able to understand the mechanism of electrical partial discharges and analyze partial discharge signals that occur when diagnosing electrical equipment. Building on these basics, students will be able to explain the aging of insulating materials and their consequences for the design and operation of equipment. They will be able to select suitable methods for determining the insulating capacity of an arrangement on the basis of statistical models and explain the result in terms of the consequences for the design of equipment. In addition, students will be able to describe the formation and relevant characteristics of arcs in air and other media as well as the resulting extinguishing principles and analyze the basic processes involved in extinguishing power arcs.
